“I’d rather be inspired by natural surroundings, and harmonize with it”
DIEGO VILLASEÑOR
Built over the course of 40 years and based on the idea that nature wonders us with much more than its beauty, Diego Villaseñor’s first impulse was to evoke the mountain’s skyline as a response to the land. Hence, the rounded ceiling is a reinterpretation of the organic forms of the mountain range, giving the sense of having a house nestled into the hillside. Besides leaning into the vernacular architecture, the house lies within the land softly, like a whisper. As a landscape architect, Ana María insisted on respecting the pre-existing trees and plants rather than imposing them on the site.
The expanded distribution of this five-bedroom house follows the several stages of its completion and also gives the visitors a sensorial experience with the morning sound of birds, the fresh scent of the encino trees, the openness of the site, the ray of light striking through the mountain’s edge at sunset… Casa Ayehualco is a reflection of the life that surrounds it.
“Throughout the year and even the day, Casa Ayehualco allows you to shift between spaces to embrace the sunlight, guided by emotions —a personal rhythm that defines true luxury.”

REGIONAL CONTEXT
Once the mythic property took form, Ana María and Diego focused on creating interior spaces that celebrated Mexican culture with a sybarite soul. They inhabited the rooms with traditional —yet unique pieces of Mexican handcrafted art.
One courtyard became a zen garden, honouring Ana María’s Japanese cultural legacy, while the studio celebrates through emotional architecture Diego’s bond with Pritzker prize winner, Luis Barragan, with whom he collaborated.
Ana María and Diego managed to merge the historical, the romantic, the modern, and the practical, giving life to a house that reflects both its legacy and its present.
“Rather than mimicking nature, I reinterpreted it while incorporating an array of my cultural influences.”
